Antonio Conte has focused on that Inter is still in the chase for the Scudetto, demanding his side would like to “achieve something extraordinary” in Serie A. Inter – third in the standings – came back to league action following the coronavirus-implemented break with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria on Sunday.
Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez were on target in a brilliant first half, the two players capping fine team move as Inter refocused from their Coppa Italia semi-final exit at the hands of Napoli.
Conte’s Inter is six points behind leaders Juventus through 26 games, and five adrift of Lazio in the race for silverware in Italy. “This evening, we had no decision yet to get the victory so we could close the gap to six points,” head coach Conte said in a news meeting.
“We feel the expectation that we can achieve something extraordinary. The facts demonstrate that we could’ve sealed it earlier by making a greater amount of our chances, however instead, we yielded at the first Samp attempt and got somewhat anxious. It was a decent performance, anyway. I repeat, it is anything but a wellness issue, yet whenever we have scoring openings and don’t take them, which also happened in the Coppa Italia with Napoli, all it takes is one fortunate ricochet and it’s all available to anyone again. Inter next meet Sassuolo on Wednesday and Conte focused on his side can’t afford to take any game daintily.
“We’re six points off the top with 12 rounds to go,” he said.
“There’s no margin for the blunder, whereas Lazio and Juventus can have the odd mistake and pull off it. This is the reason we need that fierceness before the goal, because, with a solid lead, we can then relax ready.”
Following their clash against Sassuolo, who sits twelfth in Serie An, Inter then travels to Parma with much tougher fixtures against Roma and Napoli to come in July.
Lukaku accepts each game is currently “crucial” for Inter as they hope to end the season with some silverware.
